Toby was born and raised in SW Michigan. He graduated from Ferris State University in 1977 and began a career as a graphic designer in the marketing department of the Perrigo Company where he met Leslie. Toby and Leslie were married in 1984 and they and their four children attended the West Kalamazoo Christian Church (WKCC) where he completed an in depth discipleship program and joined the leadership. When the senior pastor chose to leave WKCC to start a new church in Tucson, he asked Toby to be ordained and join him as an associate pastor. In August 1995 the Newnum's moved to Tucson and at age 37 Toby became a pastor at the Tucson Community Church a.k.a The Cool Church (TCC). It was a tremendous learning experience in the areas of music, teaching, leadership and administration. Toby resigned from TCC in 2007 and was asked to join staff at Alive Christian Church to become the campus pastor at their brand new Continental Ranch location in 2009. The idea to utilize nationally known preachers like Andy Stanley, Craig Groeschel and Steven Furtick became the catalyst for starting a new church called Vision Church. Toby and Leslie, along with a strong core group began Vision Church in April of 2011.
